Texture: Textiles in Interior Design

Textiles are one of the key elements. Texture is an often overlooked factor in interior design but all successful rooms possess different levels of texture that work together to keep the room from feeling flat. Texture sparks our sense of touch. We do not even have to physically be near a specific texture to know how it will feel. We can guess how a soft carpet in a magazine might feel on our feet and we can perceive how it would feel to be wrapped up on a chunky throw we saw in our favorite home improvement show. While there are more permanent ways of adding texture to a space, the easiest way to add it is by incorporating fabrics and textiles into our design. The good news is that many of these textures can be added to a room after much of the design is already done. Rugs, touchable pillows and soft throws can be used to add the finishing touch to your space! Just remember to vary the types of texture used in the space for a more interesting and dynamic look.

Rugs

Rugs should be seen as investment pieces as they are a major feature of a space. They are going to take up a large area of visual space as they ground your room. You are going to want to choose one that is going to be durable and withstand the test of time. When I am looking for the perfect rug to enhance my design I am not only looking for something that fits the style of the room and is to the correct scale but also I am considering lifestyle of my client and durability of the fiber. The majority of rugs on the market or made of nylon, polypropylene, polyester, acrylic, cotton or wool. Some of these fibers can be mixed together to create a blend. I usually opt for a natural fiber like wool mainly for the quality. With quality comes expense but wool is hard wearing, has excellent color retention, insulates your space, is easy to spot clean, and is considered eco-friendly.

Throws + Pillows

While rugs will always be a major player in your room, texture can be added in smaller doses in the form of throws and pillows. These pieces can be used as a finishing tool to add character to a sectional or chair. You will want to make sure you are using contrasting textiles. For example, a shaggy cream colored fur throw would contrast nicely against the smoothness of a tan leather lounge chair. Throw pillows and throws will add visual weight and create balance in your space. This means your eye will be drawn to that area of the room. Another thing you will need to consider when choosing textiles for your home is lifestyle. Do you have pets? Would you want to dry clean or hand wash these pieces? Do you have kids? If you have smaller children and pets then 100% silk throw pillows may not be the best choice but a machine washable cotton option would probably work better for your lifestyle. That being said, don’t be afraid to mix more washable fabrics with a few smaller statement pillows. If you are scared of a dry clean only fabric then maybe choose deeper darker colors or patterns. A navy Mongolian sheepskin pillow will fair much better than an ivory pillow in the same fabric in between cleanings.

I hope this helps you to better understand the role fabric and texture play in creating an inviting cozy space!
