Many customers ask me about window treatments. When your house has unusual shaped windows, what would you do for window treatments? We call these unusual shaped windows “specialty shaped windows” including arches, circles, octagons, triangles, and trapezoids.
My answer is customization of 1) plantation shutters, and 2) honeycomb shades. Store-bought square and rectangular products are unable to cover these specialty shaped windows properly.
1. Plantation Shutters
Plantation shutters cover many specialty shaped windows properly, and they still open and close. Below are some examples of specialty shapes from Eclipse Shutters.
Basically, plantation shutters work well because all shutters have nice trims around them to create a “finished look” even on specialty shaped windows. Also, they are functional due to their simple mechanism; shutters still operate well even on specialty shaped windows.
2. Honeycomb Shades
Honeycomb shades are also very versatile, and cover many specialty shaped windows properly and still mostly operate. Honeycomb fabric is like origami. So it is very flexible with shapes. Below is a picture of honeycomb special shapes for some specialty shaped windows from A New View Windows & Doors.
Depending on where in your house you have these specialty shaped windows, select different types of window coverings in order to suit your taste and needs/functions for light control and moisture exposure. It is not a decorating sin to have different types of window coverings in different rooms in your home. In fact, that’s what I always do for my customers to meet their light control and esthetic needs! There are even more innovative solutions out there to solve your specialty shaped window covering needs.
Happy window decorating!
