Recently, I completed a remodel in Danville, CA, where the home’s old, wood-burning fireplaces didn’t match the homeowners’ modern style. We replaced them with sleek gas fireplaces, breathing new life into the living spaces. In one living room with towering 22-foot ceilings, we installed a horizontal gas fireplace surrounded by floor-to-ceiling natural stone, perfectly complementing the grand scale of the room. To achieve balance, we added a custom entertainment center, creating a seamless and polished look.
In another Danville project, the existing fireplace was far too small for the room’s proportions. We replaced it with a modern gas insert, framed by elegant natural stone tiles extending to the ceiling, completely transforming the space. To highlight the client’s gorgeous backyard, we installed new casement windows on either side of the fireplace, allowing more natural light to flood in. We also designed custom entertainment cabinets below the windows, blending function with style.
Adding My Personal Touch: My Own Fireplace Makeover
In my home studio in Walnut Creek, I also revamped my fireplace! The original wood-burning fireplace was charming but didn’t quite match the room’s style. Since I wasn’t using it for heating, I decided to make it a secondary focal point that sparks joy in the space. I painted the brick white and added shiplap above the mantle, boosting the room’s architectural interest while keeping the design simple. Sometimes, a fresh coat of paint and a creative touch are all you need to let the architecture shine!
