A Contemporary California Home Reimagined for Family Living in Danville, California

This 2,200-square-foot home in Danville, California, built in the 1960s, was transformed into a sophisticated and comfortable home designed around the way a young family lives today.

The goal of this Danville interior design project was to create a home that felt clean, contemporary, timeless, and connected—while improving the flow between the kitchen, living and dining areas, primary bathroom, and outdoor spaces.

Working within the existing architecture, Yoko Oda Interior Design reimagined the home’s layout and interior finishes to bring greater functionality, natural light, and visual continuity throughout the main living spaces.

KITCHEN RENOVATION

The original kitchen was separated from the main living areas, limiting both functionality and connection to the rest of the home. The renovation opened the kitchen to the living and dining spaces, creating a more natural setting for everyday family life and entertaining.

Large windows and French doors strengthen the connection between the interior and backyard, where a pool, built-in BBQ, and covered patio create an inviting extension of the living space.

The result is an open, light-filled kitchen that feels integrated with both the architecture and the surrounding landscape.

LIVING & DINING ROOM RENOVATION

The living and dining areas were redesigned to improve circulation, proportion, and functionality.

Removing an awkwardly positioned existing fireplace opened up the room and allowed the spaces to work together more harmoniously. The updated layout creates a more comfortable environment for both everyday family living and entertaining, while maintaining a refined and cohesive aesthetic throughout the main living areas.

PRIMARY BATHROOM RENOVATION

The primary bathroom presented a unique design challenge: limited square footage and existing plumbing locations that could not be easily relocated.

Yoko Oda Interior Design worked within these constraints to create a bathroom that feels more spacious, polished, and functional without compromising the existing infrastructure.

Natural light enhances the space, while carefully selected finishes and a streamlined layout create a serene, contemporary retreat.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The transformation extended beyond the interior. A new exterior paint scheme was selected to complement the home’s original character while giving it a fresh California Casual feel.

Classic yet playful colors add personality and connect the architecture to the generous 0.35-acre property and its outdoor living spaces.

Together, the interior and exterior create a cohesive home that embraces indoor-outdoor living—an important part of the Danville lifestyle.
