COASTAL RETREAT
Contemporary Bodega Bay Home
DESIGN APPROACH
Located along the rugged Northern California coastline, this Bodega Bay retreat was designed to celebrate its extraordinary setting—expansive ocean views, natural light, and the ever-changing beauty of the landscape.
The homeowners envisioned a contemporary second home where family could gather and enjoy a more relaxed coastal lifestyle. Having previously designed their Walnut Creek residence, I was able to create a design direction that reflected their appreciation for thoughtful, modern interiors while introducing a softer, more organic connection to the surrounding environment.
The design approach centered on one guiding principle: the view should always remain the focal point. With expansive glass walls framing the kitchen, living room, and primary suite, the interiors were carefully curated to complement the architecture rather than compete with it.
A palette of natural materials, layered textures, and refined contrasts creates a sense of warmth within the home’s minimalist framework. A white leather sectional anchors the living space against dark flooring, while textured wall finishes, plush textiles, and organic materials add depth and comfort. Every furnishing was selected to balance visual simplicity with the practical needs of a home designed for gathering.
ART & PERSONAL EXPRESSION
A defining element of this Bodega Bay interior design project was the integration of the homeowner’s artwork. Inspired by nature, her watercolor paintings became an important influence on the home’s color palette and atmosphere.
In the living room, a floral watercolor piece introduced soft blues and warm golden tones that connected beautifully with the coastal surroundings. Additional sculptural lighting selections throughout the residence—chosen from both Australia and England—function as artistic elements, adding personality and individuality to the contemporary architecture.
CUSTOM DETAILS
The primary bedroom features a custom-built bed designed as a sculptural centerpiece with integrated nightstands and ambient lighting. To soften the strong architectural lines, carefully selected textiles and custom window treatments introduced warmth and subtle movement.
Preserving the uninterrupted coastal views was essential. A minimal drapery system was designed to provide function while maintaining the clean, serene quality of the space.
This Bodega Bay coastal retreat reflects a thoughtful balance of architecture, art, and interior design—creating a timeless home that feels connected to its landscape while remaining highly personal to the homeowners.
