Set within a private hillside community in Lafayette, California, this 4,500-square-foot family residence was reimagined to reflect the clients’ appreciation for modern design while honoring the home’s Craftsman architectural character.
The homeowners, a professional couple with young children, wanted a home that felt refined yet relaxed — a place designed for everyday living, entertaining, and connection. The vision was to create a warm modern interior that balanced clean architectural lines with natural materials, thoughtful functionality, and a sense of comfort throughout.
As an East Bay interior designer, Yoko Oda approached the renovation with a focus on enhancing the relationship between the architecture, interiors, and surrounding landscape. The design celebrates natural light, indoor-outdoor living, and a carefully considered palette of warm woods, organic textures, and timeless finishes.
Throughout the main living spaces — including the foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, and family room — custom cabinetry, tailored furnishings, and contemporary lighting create a cohesive environment that feels both sophisticated and inviting. A sculptural LED chandelier anchors the dramatic 21-foot foyer ceiling, creating a striking architectural moment upon arrival.
Warm stained white oak flooring, custom white oak and maple cabinetry, architectural millwork, and layered natural textures establish a sense of understated luxury. Hand-knotted wool and silk rugs, European-inspired performance textiles, custom upholstery, and thoughtfully selected artwork add depth and personality while supporting the family’s everyday lifestyle.
A defining element of the project was the transformation of the home office into a highly functional private library and workspace. Custom maple cabinetry with decorative metal wire grille detailing was designed to organize an extensive collection of books, office equipment, audio components, and technology while concealing cords and maintaining a clean, refined aesthetic.
A natural walnut library ladder adds both function and character, while two dedicated workstations, a modern lounge chair with integrated reading light, and an iconic Eames side stool create a sophisticated space designed for focus, creativity, and retreat.
The children’s bedrooms were designed with the same attention to detail, creating imaginative spaces that could evolve with the family over time. Each room combines playful elements with intentional organization, incorporating custom storage, study areas, reading spaces, and layered lighting.
From science-inspired themes to jungle and seaside influences, each child’s room reflects individuality while maintaining a timeless foundation. Textured wallpapers, deep atmospheric paint colors, and carefully selected lighting create immersive environments that encourage curiosity, imagination, and comfort.
This Lafayette residence represents the philosophy behind Yoko Oda Interior Design: creating homes that are thoughtfully layered, highly personal, and designed to support the way people truly live.
