Now that you have decided on the perfect cabinet door style with a little help from my previous blogs, it is time to start thinking of backsplash inspiration. There are a couple things to consider when choosing tile. These factors include: size of space, budget, move-out timeline, architecture, and the overall style of your kitchen or bathroom design. For example if you plan to stay in a home for less than seven years then you should be more concerned with resale value of the backsplash tile you are using. If you plan to stay in your home for a longer time period then you are allowed more creative freedom with tile choice. Now for the big question, should you go timeless or opt for something a little more trendy or unique?
Timeless
Timeless tiles will withstand the test of time and make your home easier to resell. They also can be more economic in the long run if you are renovating a large space. Subway tiles are an example of timeless tiles that many people opt for. Just remember, you can change the look of these classic tiles by changing the configuration or possibly choosing an oversized option. A larger rectangular shape will make more of an impact but still keep things in the safe zone. Natural stone tiles updated in a hexagon mosaic will create a happy medium for those looking to still add interest without going over the top. Your design can also get creative when it comes to basic tiles. They can be arranged in a herringbone pattern or vertically or horizontally stacked for a cleaner more modern look. Another way to make a classic tile more unique is to go with a textured tile. This will not only create visual interest but it will also prolong the life of your backsplash as it will hide imperfections in high traffic areas.
Trendy
Now let’s have some fun with trendy bright and patterned tiles. There are so many different trends out now when it comes to accent tiles, from cement Moroccan style tiles to updated southwest patterns and beyond. Maybe a bold teal is your favorite hue but it might not be the best choice for your everyday space. This is a space you will have to spend lots of time in and brighter colors or ornate patterns can date your home in the long run. A subtle muted aqua could give you the right amount of color to make you happy while keeping your space livable. While trendy tiles can be an eyesore, in some cases they can bring life to an all-white kitchen or smaller space. If you are going for a patterned tile, it is best to stick with neutrals or go with a contrasting black and white pattern to add drama. Soft and subtle geometric shapes in “safe” colors will incorporate the best of both worlds. When choosing statement tiles it is smart to evaluate whether or not you are dealing with a fad or choosing an option that you will be happy with for years to come. If you absolutely love a new trend in tile then there may be a way to make it work in your design but make sure you do your research. Do you have the budget to rip it out when it no longer suites your style?
I hope that this helps you to select right kitchen backsplash tiles as you remodel your kitchen. Find what works for you! Good luck!
